The Ambitious Card Routine
Category: Sleight of Hand · Difficulty: 4/5
A signed card is buried in the middle of the deck — and rises to the top. Again. And again. The most legendary card routine in history.
You'll Need This to Perform the Trick
Bicycle Rider Back Playing Cards + Card Clip — A fresh deck plus a leather card clip to keep your set in performance condition. Used by Dani DaOrtiz, Garrett Thomas, and Daniel Madison.
Step-by-Step Performance Guide
- 1. The Selection — Have a card freely selected, signed across the face by the spectator, and replaced into the middle of the deck.
- 2. First Rise — Square the deck. Cut it. Tap it. Turn over the top card — it's the signed card. The spectator gasps.
- 3. Second Rise — Place the card back in the middle. Insert it cleanly. Snap your fingers. Top card again. Their reactions escalate.
- 4. Impossible Climax — On the final rise, the card teleports from the deck and appears in your back pocket — or in your wallet, or stuck to the ceiling. The choice is yours.
The Secret Behind the Trick
- 1. The Double Lift — On the first rise, you don't actually return the signed card to the middle. A double-lift makes it *look* like you did, while it stays on top the whole time.
- 2. The Tilt Insertion — On the second rise, use the 'tilt' move — the card appears to go in the middle but actually slides under the top card. The signed card is now second from top, controlled.
- 3. The Side Steal — For the climax, the side-steal sleight removes the signed card from the deck without anyone seeing. You then reveal it from your wallet — secretly loaded between phases.
- 4. Build the Routine — There are dozens of phases you can build into this. Start with two rises. Add phases as your skill grows. Six clean phases is the sweet spot for a full set piece.
