The Floating Dollar Bill
Category: Sleight of Hand · Difficulty: 3/5
A borrowed bill rises off your hand and floats freely in the air, then returns to its owner — a piece of pure visual magic.
You'll Need This to Perform the Trick
Invisible Thread + Anchor Wax Floating Bill Kit — Pro-grade invisible thread, a tested anchor system and a tutorial DVD covering the full floating-bill routine including audience load.
Step-by-Step Performance Guide
- 1. Borrow a Bill — Borrow a one-dollar bill from a spectator. Have them mark it with a pen so they know it's the same one.
- 2. Set the Float — Hold the bill flat between your fingertips. The bill begins to slowly rise off your fingers and hover in midair.
- 3. Pass a Hoop — While the bill floats, pass your hand or a borrowed ring over and under it — proving there are no strings attached (visibly).
- 4. Return the Bill — Reach out and pluck the floating bill from the air. Hand it back to the spectator. Walk away.
The Secret Behind the Trick
- 1. The Anchor Setup — An invisible thread runs from a tiny anchor point on the bill (a pinprick of beeswax), up over the back of your hand, and to a button on your jacket.
- 2. The Hoop Pass — The hoop pass works because the thread is anchored to your *body*, not the bill alone. You can pass the hoop along the line of the thread without ever crossing it.
- 3. Breaking the Thread — When you take the bill back, you crush the wax dab between your fingers and break the thread. The bill is fully examinable in seconds.
