The French Drop (Coin)
Category: Sleight of Hand · Difficulty: 2/5
The cornerstone vanish of close-up magic — every working magician in the world knows this move cold.
You'll Need This to Perform the Trick
Half Dollar Magic Coin (Eisenhower-weight) — A heavy, milled US-style half dollar — the perfect size, weight and audibility for close-up coin work. Lasts decades.
Step-by-Step Performance Guide
- 1. Show the Coin — Hold a coin in your right hand, displayed openly between fingertips. The audience clearly sees it from both sides.
- 2. The Take — Bring your left hand over and appear to take the coin out of the right hand with your fingers. Close your left hand into a fist around it.
- 3. Move Away — Move your left fist slowly away from the right hand. Stare at it. Build tension.
- 4. The Vanish — Open your left fist with a magical flourish. The coin has vanished. Your right hand can be casually shown empty.
The Secret Behind the Trick
- 1. The False Take — When the left hand 'takes' the coin, the coin actually drops down into the right thumb-palm position — held by the base of the right thumb against the palm. The left hand closes on nothing.
- 2. Misdirect with Eyes — Look directly at your left fist as it moves away. Where you look, the audience looks. They forget the right hand exists.
- 3. Practice for 50 Hours — This move looks identical to a real take only after a couple hundred reps. Practice in front of a mirror — make the false take and the real take indistinguishable.
