Step-by-Step Performance Guide
- 1. Write Your Prediction — On a folded slip of paper, write the number 1089. Hand the folded paper to a spectator without showing them.
- 2. Their Three-Digit Number — Have them think of any 3-digit number whose first and last digits differ by at least 2 (e.g., 821).
- 3. Reverse and Subtract — Have them reverse the digits (128) and subtract the smaller from the larger: 821 − 128 = 693.
- 4. Reverse and Add — Reverse the result (396) and add it to itself: 693 + 396 = 1089.
- 5. Reveal — Have them open your prediction. It says 1089. Match.
The Secret Behind the Trick
- 1. The Math — Any 3-digit number with first/last digits differing by 2+, when reversed-subtracted then reversed-added, *always* equals 1089. Pure number theory — no skill required.
- 2. The Patter — Frame this as a mind-reading effect. Take time. Misdirect from the math by stressing 'concentrate on your number'. The math feels like coincidence rather than inevitability.
- 3. Why This Always Works — If the original number is 100a + 10b + c, the reverse is 100c + 10b + a. Subtract: 99(a-c). For a-c ≥ 2, you get 198, 297, 396… all of which when reversed-added give 1089. Mathematics is the most reliable magician.
