Multiplying Sponge Balls

Multiplying Sponge Balls magic trick tutorial — performance preview

Category: Kids Magic · Difficulty: 2/5

A single sponge ball placed in your spectator's closed fist mysteriously becomes two — a close-up classic.

You'll Need This to Perform the Trick

Professional Sponge Ball Set (4 balls, 1.5 inch) — Soft, durable sponge balls used by working close-up magicians. Compresses to nothing in your palm and springs back perfectly visible.

Step-by-Step Performance Guide

  1. 1. Show One Ball — Display a single soft red sponge ball in your right hand. Place it firmly into the spectator's closed fist.
  2. 2. Make a Magical Gesture — Snap your fingers and tell them to squeeze tight. Tell them they should feel something happening.
  3. 3. The Reveal — Open the spectator's hand to reveal — two sponge balls. They are sure they only ever held one.

The Secret Behind the Trick

  1. 1. Finger Palm a Second Ball — From the start, you have a second sponge ball secretly hidden in finger-palm position in your right hand. Sponges compress to nothing — they're effectively invisible.
  2. 2. The Load — When you place the visible ball into the spectator's fist, your fingers also slip the hidden ball into the same fist. Their hand closes on both.
  3. 3. Show Both Hands Empty — After the load, immediately show both your hands clearly empty. The magic happens in their hand — the only place they don't suspect.
